UI Maintains Standards Despite JAMB Announced Cut Off Marks

The Management of the University of Ibadan wishes to inform the public about the recently announced cut off marks of 120 for University Admission that UI will not lower her standards .
A statement from the Vice Chancellor's office indicates that the Nigeria's premier university still maintains her position  in academic excellence and standards in order to continue to aspire towards becoming a world-class university.

It should worry us as patriots that candidates who scored just 30% in UTME can be admitted into some of our universities. Yet, we complain of poor quality of our graduates. You can hardly build something on nothing. The consolation here is that since JAMB started conducting this qualifying exam in 1978, UI has never admitted any candidate who scored less than 200 marks out of the maximum 400 marks.
This translates to a minimum of 50%. This remains our position as an institution aspiring to be world -class. Reality is that only about four other universities in the country have such high standard. To that extent, apart from being the oldest, we are an elite university in the country at least judging by the quality of our intakes.
In fairness to the Registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, he repeatedly stressed at the Combined Policy Meeting held Tuesday,22 August 2017  that the Senate of each university still has wide powers for admission in the spirit of autonomy. It is also gratifying to note that the Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who chaired the meeting, apologized publicly for canceling Post UTME Screening last year.
In effect, universities are now allowed to conduct PostUTME test, using modalities approved by the Senate of each institution
To be fair to the incumbent Registrar of JAMB, he was not the Registrar when the policy somersault of cancelling POST UTME test was made last year. Prof Oloyede's appointment was effective 1 August 2016, while the Policy Meeting for that year had held some two months earlier.
As strongly canvassed by us at every opportunity, for UI, the need to admit the best admission seekers is the primary motivation for POST UTME test and not money, even though we do not pretend that you can run any university so properly called without funds.

JAMB Announces 2017 Official Cut-Off Marks For All Institutions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has set the the minimum cut-off mark for admissions into universities at 120.

This followed the conclusion of the combined policy meeting which had Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts of higher institutions as well as other stake holders in attendance.

The minimum cut off marks for polytechnics and colleges of education was set at 100 while that of innovative enterprising institutes was set at 110.

It was also decided at the meeting that admission into first choice universities should close on October 15 while December 15, 2017 was set as the closing date for second choice admission by institutions.

Also, admissions into public degree awarding institutions for the 2017 UTME examination will end on January 15, 2018 while for private institutions, it ends on January 31, 2018.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede said institutions, with the decision, are not to go below the minimum cut-off points adopted at the meeting for admissions.

He called for the adoption of flexible cut-off marks for admission processes by higher institutions in the country.

According to him, “What JAMB has done is to recommend; We will only determine the minimum, whatever you determine as your admission cut-off mark is your decision.

“The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.”He said.

“The admission process is now automated with direct involvement of the registrar of JAMB for final approval.

“We have agreed to regularize admissions that were done under the table this year. From next year we will not accept anything like that.”

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu stated that the cancellation on post-UTME was a mistake and said institutions are now at liberty to conduct, while adding that fee for the examination should not exceed N2000.

JAMB Introduces Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) For 2017/2018 Admission

Report from the ongoing JAMB policy meeting indicates that JAMB has introduced the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) which is geared towards ensuring quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process.

According to a participant, the new policy is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.’
.... Continue reading after this commercial break
Advertisements
....
These institutions will write to JAMB to request for the students and also give them (students) three days to respond. Also, only three universities can request for a candidate if the policy is adopted.

The new policy is also expected to allow institutions in Nigeria peg their cut off point after meeting with their respective senates.

The new policy will also give the academic board or senate of an institution the power to ‘allocate percentages to JAMB, the school and O’level results as these will be calculated to get the students’ cut off marks for post-UTME.’

It was also learnt that JAMB wants to ensure there is a unified time for closing admission in all universities.
If the policy sails through, there will be a portal for admission which will be based on cut off points, quota system and catchment areas.

“The new system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points,” an admission officer for a tertiary institution who was at the meeting said. “If a candidate does not meet the cut off, no matter whom he or she knows, such person cannot be admitted.”

The official said the system was demonstrated to all the attendees at Monday’s meeting, most of whom expressed satisfaction with it.

Also, the policy intends to make provisions for candidates to accept and reject any admission being offered to them.

The intended policy also looks out for candidates who are unable to go for National Youth Service, NYSC, because they do not have JAMB admission letters. This set of students could be asked to pay a fee, about N10,000 for regularisation and would be able to go for the youth service.

JAMB is expected to formally brief journalists on these new policies on Tuesday afternoon.```

FG Lifts Ban On Post-UTME

The Federal Government has lifted the ban on the conduct of Post-UTME aptitude test/examinations usually conducted by schools for candidates seeking admission.

Minister of Education Adamu Adamu said  in Abuja that universities, polytechnics and other institutions were free to organise post-UTME screening as a pre-condition to gaining admission into public institutions.

He explained that the Federal Government scrapped the controversial examination in order to fully understand what was going on in the institutions.

The minister added that the government was now wiser regarding the conduct of the examination.

Adamu, in June last year at a combined policy meeting on admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, in Abuja banned the examination.

He however urged institutions and its authorities to make the fees for the post-UTME screening affordable in order not to impose huge financial burdens on parents.

The Federal Government has lifted the ban on the conduct of examinations usually organised by universities for admission seekers after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

He explained that the Federal Government scrapped the controversial examination in order to fully understand what was going on in the institutions.

The minister added that the government was now wiser regarding the conduct of the examination.

He urged the institutions and its authorities to make the fees for the post-UTME screening affordable in order not to impose huge financial burdens on parents.

He expressed confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Adamu, who hailed the management of JAMB for remitting N5 billion to the Federal Government, said the money was the highest so far in the last 40 years of JAMB’s existence.

JAMB Change Of Course/Institution Still Ongoing.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has made it known that it will not close the change of courses and institutions procedures, until 2017/2018 admission is concluded.

JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the newsmen.

Mr Benjamin said it was wrong for any student to observe that the board would close the change of courses and institutions procedure soon and implored candidates to avoid panic, but take time to make decision that is suitable for them, to secure admission into higher institutions.

According to him, it is a continuous exercise and ‘we do not intend to close the procedure; it will only close after admission has been concluded.

“This is so because there are moments whereby candidates who chose particular institution will not have opportunity there and other one will want to offer them admission.

“If closed, it will be difficult to access such offer, all candidates need to do is go back to the portal and make changes to those institutions and access available opportunities.

“We want to avoid situation whereby candidates will have multiple admission and will take one and be denied that opportunity.

“When we do that statistics will be strengthened; if candidates choose University of Lagos and later consider Yaba-Tech the statistic will reflect the second choice.

“So that when we are giving account of admission of candidate, we will be able to provide accurate statistic and not distorted data we have been dishing out before,” he said.

He said that the change is imperative for candidates who made mistakes while choosing courses they want to study or the institution or university they want to apply to.

Benjamin explained that the process of change of courses and institutions could be done with the payment of N2,500 in JAMB Computer Based Tests (CBT) centres and at other approved centres.

He, therefore, advised candidates who wished to change their choice of course or institution to think properly, before doing so to avoid irregularities.

Mr. Benjamin said that the board would hold the policy committee meeting on August 21 and 22, to determine cut-off points for admissions this year into various courses and tertiary institutions.

He further said that the decision for the cut-off points for admission would be decided by Vice-Chancellors of universities, Rectors of Polytechnics and Mono-techniques and Provosts of Colleges of Education.

JAMB To Disclose Cut-off Marks For 2017 Admission Next Week

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has made it known that it will hold its policy committee meeting on August 21 and 22 to determine the cut off marks for admission into various courses in Nigerian tertiary institutions this year.

A press statement made available by the Board stated that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, had given the Board approval to hold the policy committee meeting on 2017 admission.

According to the statement, the meeting will kickstart the 2017 admission exercise.

“All stakeholders including vice-chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and mono-technics and provosts of colleges of education would be in attendance,” the statement said.

JAMB disclosed that it has sent to all institutions a soft copy of printout of candidates who chose them.

“This year, the Board has sent candidates who scored 100 and above in their JAMB to the institutions in its flexible admission policy for institutions to determine the suitability of the candidates in compliance with all laid down rules and regulations as determined by the proprietors of the institutions and approved by Senate of the various schools.

“The Board will ensure that criteria set by Senate are strictly adhered to by the institutions’ admission officers and no shifting of goal posts in the middle of the admission exercise.

“This is to guarantee fairness and equity to all candidates.”
